CHART 2026 Copenhagen: competition entry ‘Reclaimed Signals’: Copenhagen’s advertising banners — those everyday visuals we barely notice, discarded after their short life—become Reclaimed Signals. Rescued from landfills, they’re transformed into a vibrant canopy above Charlottenborg’s courtyard, filtering sunlight into dynamic color patterns that give voice to the city’s overlooked urban layer.

Beneath this “city skin”, scaffolding hosts bars, cafés, and gathering zones where locals and visitors connect through conversation and Nordic art discovery. Totem towers rise as urban lighthouses, guiding movement between Kongens Nytorv and Kunsthal Charlottenborg while anchoring social spaces.

100% circular: The modular stripes simply unclip and restitch into artist backdrops or community dividers—nothing goes to waste.
From unnoticed daily backdrop to spatial protagonist, Reclaimed Signals reveals Copenhagen's hidden visual memory, inviting everyone to
CHART's cultural crossroads.

The project is conceived as a regular grid of scaffolding structures that form a vibrant
mini-village composed of towers and lower volumes. This modular system creates a
dynamic spatial composition, where varying heights and colors define a playful and
engaging environment.

The cladding of the scaffolding is made from recycled construction banners collected
from other building sites across Copenhagen. These reused materials not only give the
installation its distinctive visual identity, but also serve a functional purpose as shading
devices. Suspended across the structures, the banners provide shelter for the bar, dining,
and dance activities hosted within the pavilions, reinforcing the project’s sustainable and
social character.

Enhanced Social Activation & Wayfinding
Beneath this canopy, the courtyard becomes a vibrant public stage where the
scaffolding hosts bars, cafés, and gathering zones. These spaces foster
socialization, art exploration, and cultural exchange—inviting Copenhageners
and visitors alike to pause, connect, and experience CHART's Nordic art scene at
their own rhythm.
Tall Totem towers rise through the canopy as urban lighthouses—each precisely
positioned to mark and illuminate specific bars and restaurants while serving as
multifunctional hubs (info points, lighting beacons, seating anchors) that guide
free movement between Kongens Nytorv and Kunsthal Charlottenborg.

100% CIRCULAR DESIGN
All components meet Danish disassembly standards (DS/ISO 20887) for full material recovery. Post-event, stripes redeploy as artist backdrops or community dividers; lightweight system installs in days, disassembles trace-free.
'Reclaimed Signals' turns waste into wonder, transforming Copenhagen's discarded voices into spatial memory—a total artistic installation that amplifies CHART's mission to create space for Nordic art and culture to unfold for the widest possible.
